iksemel rusted

Image
I had written some Rust code before, but it was for command-line tools,  Advent of Code  solutions, and similar small-scale programs. I was looking for a suitable project to delve deeper into Rust and decided to rewrite an old C project of mine in Rust! Iksemel  was a fast and easy-to-use XML/ XMPP  library which I developed over two decades ago. It was written in highly portable C and used in all sorts of places, including: an instant messenger on the Amiga home computer; an embedded sensor with 64 kilobytes of memory that posted measurements to users on Google Talk; the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey's Linux distribution's  Pisi Package Manager  via its Python bindings; and a bunch of  Symbian  devices. Did you know that Google Talk used to speak the open XMPP protocol before it was enshittified? I haven't worked much on it recently since neither the XML format nor the XMPP instant messaging protocol is widely ...

Margin Call

The  Margin Call  is one of the tightest films ever made. Every scene and every line serve a purpose. No time is wasted with the exposition. Focus is on how people justify the evil deed they participate and their internal struggles in an almost impressionistic way, yet you can construct a consistent and surprisingly rich backstory from the subtext. I have watched it too many times, and noticed more details with almost every watch. Characters Let's start with a recap of characters in the corporate bottom up order: Seth  is a junior risk management analyst. He likes his job and has enough skills to survive, but he cannot read the room well, and he is too nosey. He doesn't have any agency, and his sympathy for other people is not genuine. Peter  is a risk management analyst. He moved from academia to finance because of the money. He has sympathy for people around him, but he is also swayed easily by charismatic and powerful people, and he is lured by the considera...

Boza

Image
Boza is a thousands of years old, non-alcoholic, fermented drink made from the millet flour, originating from Central Asia. It is gluten free, dairy free, vegan, and probiotic. It has a unique taste which is not available in any other drink. I used to drink it at  Vefa Bozacısı , a three hundred years old Boza house in Istanbul, when I was a young child. They had a family feud around early 2000s and they never recovered their taste and the quality after that event. What makes Boza particularly difficult to commercialize is that the fermentation continues even under refrigeration, and after about a week, it becomes undrinkable. Traditionally they weren't even making it during the summer for this reason. You can also find it in the grocery stores in Turkey, but the product is pasteurized to keep it consumable for days and weeks, and therefore loses all the probiotic health benefits and also some of its taste in the process. This is why I have done some research and experimenta...
